No? Well you are not alone! A recent survey showed that over 50% of the women in US and Europe had never heard of Bacterial Vaginosis.

Bacterial Vaginosis – The most common Vaginal infection

As the name implies it’s a bacterial infection of the vagina. In fact, it is the most common vaginal infection out there. And will affect about one out of three women at some point in there life.

It is interestng that over 50% of women not knowing what this is yet its so common and produces symptoms that really you can’t ignore.

Its not like yeast infection. Alot of women when interview in a recent survey, confused yeast infection with bacterial vaginosis, thinking it was the same condition.

What causes Bacterial Vaginosis?

All over your body you’ve got bacteria, they just live in harmony with your body. Inside the vagina, where is warm, moist and dark, the bacteria really thrive. Now, in your vagina you have good freindly bacteria and bad bacteria – the freindly ones keep the bad ones under control. These bacteria live in an acid balance inside the vagina that is known as “PH” , when this acid balance is altered the freindly bacteria lose their power, giving chance for the bad bacteria to multiply which produce the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.

What symptoms to you look for?

You will have a discharge, usually a thin watery grey to white discharge. Unfortunately this discharge has a strong fishy smell. The irritation from  the discharge and the infection affects the vagina and the outside vulva. And many women are embarassed by this.

So who is prone to this?

If you’ve had unprotected sex with several partners, you’ll have increased risk. If you have heavy periods you are at increased risk. Sometimes using perfumed personal products can affect the acid balance down below. That could be alot of women !

Myth: Bacterial vaginosis is not a sexually transmitted infection. You don’t  catch it from somebody else, its your bacteria that get into an unbalanced situation.

Can Bacterial Vaginosis Cause Long term problems?

The bacteria can creep up from the vagina to the womb, along into your falopian tubes and then you can have pelvic inflamatory disease, which can be a cause of infertility. It can also be linked with premature labour and sometimes with late miscariage.

BV also causes immotional problems. Lets face it, if you are aware of a fishy odor down below it does feel pretty horrible, knocks your self esteem down. It can even leave you feeling quite depressed actually. And it certainly has an effect on relationships – alot of ladies who suffer from BV have problems when having sex.

And so its important to get rid of Bacterial Vaginosis. If you’ve got those symptoms – any of them – its important to address them somehow.

What Bacterial Vaginosis Treatments are available?

The usual bv treatment would be antibiotics like Metronidazole, which are effective. But, some women don’t like the metal taste you can get from this and it can cause a little bit of nausea and so it doesn’t suite every woman.

These treatments are effective but the condition does tend to recure !!
